The Role of the Organic Professor (made of flesh, bones, blood and other decaying material)
on the Inorganic Net
Question: Once you put your courses online, who needs you anymore? Why can't students just surf the net, write on their own and correspond with professors by e-mail?
Answer:Online courses can be enhanced and supplemented by the following:
-
As an online swimming instructor:Sometimes we swim, sometimes we float and sometimes we drown in the overwhelming information.
Professors should help students surf powerfully through the WWW with a strong surfboard, in other words, a well-developed thesis and clear focus. If the skills are taught in person as well as online,
chances are there will be little need for CPR.
- To rehabilitate the cyberbody: Sitting for hours at a computer can make you sedentary, fat, arthritic etc. Therefore classes should be more physical, a place where students move their bodies
and find the connections between their bodyminds. Inverted positions such as shoulder stands and headstands are good to get the circulation going to the brain.
- To bring back theatre into the classroom:To offset the deleterious effects of cyberspace, the classroom should again become a theatre where debates, arguments,
spectacle, role-playing once again occur as they did in classical Greece.
