Peer Assessment

(Adjusted or Relative Assessments)
This reflects the average adjusted peer assessments received by the student. Each peer assessment received by a student has been adjusted by the average level of assessment given within a particular paper group by the person making the assessment (done separately for each of the 4 qualities assessed), making them relative rather than absolute. Essentially, if Jo is a member of one of your groups, we divide each assessment you received from Jo by the average assessment Jo made of all the members in your group. The resulting relative assessment might be, for example, .75 if Jo thinks you did a poor job compared to others in the group, 1 if Jo thinks you did about average for the group, or 1.25 if Jo thinks your contribution was considerably greater or better than that of others. These relative assessments have then been averaged for each paper, then averaged across the papers (so the set of assessments received on each paper have the same weight on the overall assessment regardless of group sizes).
Percentile Assessments
Previous peer assessment expressed as a percentile standing in the class.
Others vs Self This column indicates how the relative adjusted assessments you receive from others compare to the relative adjusted assessments you have given yourself. Just as is done to adjust the assessments other give you (by group) to make them relative to assessments given others in your group, similarly the assessments you give yourself are adjusted in comparison to the assessments you give others. So, if you rate yourself as doing better than others in your group your relative self-assessments would be greater than 1 or if you rated yourself as doing less well than others your relative self-assessment would be less than one. The number shown here is the ratio between the relative adjusted assessments given to you by others and the relative adjusted assessments you give yourself, averaged across groups. These mean, for example, if you have a value of .70 then others rate your relative contribution as only 70% what you rate it, if you have a value of 1.1 then others rate your relative contribution as 10% higher than you have rated yourself.  Notice that the average here is .89, because people on the average rate their performance 10% higher than others rate them.  If your ratio is well below this number you might want to consider why others think less of your contribution than do you; if your ratio is well above this number, you might want to consider if you are undervaluing your work.
Raw Group Paper Grade This is simply the average of the raw grades received by the group papers on which you worked (after one paper it is simply the grade on the one paper). It is included here only for cross-checking purposes. If this value does not equal the average of the raw grades given your group papers, a recording error has been made, so let us know.
Individual (Adjusted) Grades
The last four columns show the final grades earned by each student's work in this class.  They are based on the quality of the papers (as indicated in the grades posted for them) and the peer assessments, then scaled (with adjustments for class participation as described below). The grades are calculated through a complex spreadsheet containing every student assessment made during the semester and all the position paper grades. Essentially, to get the grade a student receives on a paper, we multiply the grade awarded the relevant paper by the average relative assessment that the student received from the other members of that group to get an assessment adjusted grade. For example, if your group received a B for your paper (a 3.00), then the if the others thought your contribution was limited to the point that your average relative assessment was .75, your adjusted grade would be 2.25; if they thought your contribution was average so your average relative assessment equaled 1.0, then your adjusted grade would be 3.00; and if they thought you were outstanding so that your average relative assessment was 1.25, then your adjusted grade would be 3.75. This process produces an adjusted grade for each student for each paper.
The resulting adjusted grades are then averaged to get the grade shown in grade point form in the Individual Grade column; this is your final grade in this class based on the papers and peer assessments according to your internal grading.
The Percentile Standing column gives the percentile rank of each student's current individual grade average compared to the rest of the class.
The Letter Grade column shows just that.  It is the internal class letter grade equivalent to your Individual Grade in this class.  Note that it is the numeric Individual Grade that is averaged across papers to produce the final grade in the class; the Letter Grade shown here aims to give the normal representation of the current numeric grade as a letter, but is not as precise as the numeric grade.
The Final Grade column shows your reported grade.  The internal class grades have been scaled to the average grade scale of all MAP social science courses over the past two semesters.  (In a few cases with low grades, the MAP scaling produces a lower grade; in those cases we use the higher internal grade; the MAP rescaling is used only to raise grades.)   Additionally, some students grades have been raised because of the quality of their class participation or other contributions (and in a few cases lowered because of an issue); in these cases the grade appears in red.
