~~~ Class Grades ~~~
The tables below show the final grades recorded for students in this class. The first table is sorted by IDs so it is easy to find your grades.  The second table is sorted by grades, with the best overall records at the top - this table allows you to see how the pattern of grades you achieved compares to the patterns for the rest of the class.
  • The Class ID is a 5 character hexadecimal SHA1 hash based on your NYU ID and last name.  To generate this ID, go to the web page:
         www.sha1-online.com
    In the box on that page, enter your NYU ID plus (no spaces) your last name, then click the "hash" button.  For example, if I had NYU ID  N12345678  and the last name Brown, I would enter N12345678Brown (must use capital for first letter of last name).  This will produce a long result - we use just the last 5 characters.  So, N12345678Brown would produce "67e7bb6510a45bd3a855eaa6a5ea28210a41aadb" and my class id would be 1AADB.
  • The "Quizzes" shows the cumulative percentage of possible points achieved for all quizzes in the class (based on the adjusted average quiz score after the two lowest scores were removed).
  • The "Final Exam" column reports the percentage of possible points (50) achieved on the final exam.  (Remember, the final exam question on which you did the least well was not counted. It was 5 points possible for each of the 10 questions that did count.)
  • The "Quizzes & Final Combined" column shows the grade combining the quizzes and the final exam into a "weighted" average; here the final exam counts for either 50% or 20%, depending on which combination gives a student the best grade.  Thus, if a student did better on the final exam, it counts as much as all the quizzes combined; if a student did worse on the final exam, it counts as only one-fifth of the "tests" grade.
  • The "Paper" column is simply the summary grade for the term paper.  The assessments of the gender autobiographies considered how accurately, insightfully, and broadly the paper used course material; the quality of the biographical analysis in the paper, the quality of the causal analyses in the paper, and how well the paper was written as a whole.
  • The "Posted Grade" column shows the "official" grade the student receives for the course; it is based on a "weighted" average of the grades received for the combined tests and the final paper.  If the student did better on the paper than on exams, the paper counts 60% and the combined tests count 40%.  Alternatively, if the student did better on the combined tests than on the paper, then the combined tests count 60% and the paper 40% of the overall class grade.    (Note: NYU does not award an A+, so an A+ shown here will appear officially as an A.)
  • The final class grades may seem slightly at variance with the grades achieved for the several parts.  First, where appropriate, the final class grade is adjusted to give credit for a student's class participation; for example, if the Quizzes & Final Combined grade and the Paper grade are both an B+ but the Posted Grade is an A-, the reason will be credit for class participation.  Second, the calculation of the final grades uses the exact numerical value of the grades for each part; for example, a "B+" could be anywhere between a 3.1 and a 3.4.  So, combining two letter grades can have slightly different results depending whether they are at the high or low end of the numerical range for those grades.
  • The medians for each column are shown in the last row of the first table.
