Research Question
(Clear, unambiguous) |
"To what extent has the increase in female
representation and leadership in government and industry contributed to the
rise of right-wing populism in the US?"
This is a worthy but really very difficult question. There is a tradition of considering how
improvements in women's status can induce backlash. Because such backlash occurs over time in
the midst not only of improvement's in women's status, but overall increased
acceptance and approval of those changes, identifying backlash as a causal
outcome is rather tricky. |

Relevant
Literature |
The materials mentioned
are relevant, but you would need to look at the larger literature on backlash
against increased gender equality, and backlash against other analogous
changes (such as improvements in minority rights and status). |
|
Causal Interpretations
(clear, all parts defined, mechanisms, controls, plausible) |
Neither type of causal interpretation offered
allows for very effective research.
Changes in opinions from polls as a result of specific events, such as
Clinton's nomination, tend to be temporary and not really meaningful. Because they are fleeting, they cannot be
distinguished from salience effects and the like. The second type of causal relationship
mentioned, where people's attitudes about one opinion (such as populist
sentiment) affect their attitudes about another (such as women's place) have
little meaning. Opinions of this sort
are not independent characteristics located in separate parts of our brains,
rather they are interrelated interpretations we construct in a moment. |

Data
(variables, sample, comparison) |
It is not obvious how
this data can be used to address the research question in a rigorous manner. |
|
Research Value |
Understanding what determines people's opinions
and political allegiances is certainly important. It is not clear how this project will help
us do that. |
|
Overall |
A good area of research
concern, but, as yet, not a project outline that seems headed anywhere
productive. |
