Research Question
(Clear, unambiguous) |
"How does immigration impact trade in
goods and services among the U.S. and their import/export
partners?" This question is fine,
as far as it goes. Migrations patterns
are complex and varied: consider temporary vs. permanent; educated and
affluent vs. uneducated, working class (as with refugees), or those following
historic patterns vs. those displaying a new type. And immigrants can come from highly varied
economies. All of which suggests the
question should be much more nuanced. |
|
Relevant
Literature |
The works discussed are
certainly relevant. However, a
literature review for this will have to range more widely, to get a hold on
the relevant work more generally on migration and trade. |
|
Causal Interpretations (clear, all
parts defined, mechanisms, controls, plausible) |
Simply stating that a rise or fall in
immigration might influence a rise or fall in trade covers the simple logical
possibilities, but gives us no idea about what might be the relevant causal
processes. It also ignores the obvious
reverse possibilities - that international trading influences immigration. |
|
Data
(variables, sample, comparison) |
The two sources of data
on immigration and trade are in the right areas, but the critical question
would concern how you can use them together. |
|
Research Value |
It seems unlikely that the influence of
immigration on trade is great enough that trade goals would inform
immigration policy, except in the face of political consequences which are not part of
this research. The results might be
interesting just because they give us added insights into what influences
trade. All this depends on what new
findings could emerge beyond what people already know. |
|
Overall |
This is an interesting
potential area of research, but it might prove too tricky to be worth the
effort. |
