Research Question (Clear, unambiguous) |
"I intend to examine whether leisure
choices are more strongly affected by perceived social class and the general
spending patterns of certain demographic communities more so than
income." Okay, so the basic idea
here seems to concern the influence of conformity. |
|
Relevant
Literature |
No discussion of
literature. (Although, to be fair, in
each project description, you show some familiarity with the literature and a
good effort to look at some of the relevant findings) Given the nature of the ideas, you would
probably be interested in sociological studies concerning culture or art that
stress the ideas of Bourdieu. |
|
Causal Interpretations (clear, all
parts defined, mechanisms, controls, plausible) |
"I hypothesize that the social pressures
or common tendencies of a particular demographic group cause certain leisure
choices, independent of income or education level." Okay, this is a pretty clear causal
statement that individual cultural choices depend on social location. |
|
Data
(variables, sample, comparison) |
While the description of
data to be used seems thoughtful, it is not apparent how it can translate
into an analysis. The counterfactual
might be how members of a "demographic group" would spend their
leisure time in the absence of influences toward cultural or network
conformity. How do you think you can
get at this with the data being considered? |
|
Research Value |
Insights into the significance of conformity
are clearly theoretically valuable, although this is not what you
mention. As for the goal of
understanding why some kinds of people do not attend museums, it is not clear
that showing it is because others in their milieu also do not actually
translates into a policy insight. |
