2974.2 Assessment
Research Question (Clear, unambiguous) "What is the effect of single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) at the Serotonin Transporter on depression?"  The research question seems a bit over stated.  It presumably would not be the "effect" of the specific genetic condition, but rather a correlation that implies a causal relationship of unknown form without further information.
Relevant Literature Again, provide citations and interpretations, not URLs.  The referent article is appropriate, but does not suggest what literature is relevant.
Causal Interpretations (clear, all parts defined, mechanisms, controls, plausible) Essentially, the causal statements simply suggest that the genetic condition either contributes to depressive symptoms or it does not.  This is true but a bit slim as a causal analysis.
Data (variables, sample, comparison) Assuming the Add Health data include indicators for the genetic condition, then the data are appropriate.  Since most scientists studying depression at this time would probably argue that both physiological and experiential conditions contribute, in varying ways and degrees, it is not obvious what other circumstances the research would have to include to be effective.
Research Value The research topic is of both scientific and medical interest.  It seems unlikely to contribute to either gene therapy or detection of depression as suggested.
Overall This somewhat narrowly defined project is reasonable, but its potential would depend on how far it could be elaborated to take into account the complex social and psychological influences that are relevant.
