Research Question (Clear, unambiguous) |
"Does exposure to gun violence effect
views on gun control policies?"
The question seems a bit too general.
The alternative, that exposure to gun violence has no effect seems so
unlikely, that doing research to show it untrue appears pointless. So, the question needs greater
specification. |

Relevant
Literature |
The cited articles seem
relevant, but not particularly valuable.
Should indicate where to go from here. |
|
Causal Interpretations (clear, all
parts defined, mechanisms, controls, plausible) |
Well, assuming exposure to gun violence has
some effect, it does indeed have to be in one direction or another, but
saying that is not really offering a causal interpretation. Consider what are the contingent conditions
under which we might expect the effect to go in one direction or
another. |
|
Data
(variables, sample, comparison) |
Okay on the two
variables, but really, they are just the beginning, not the conclusion of the
data needs. |
|
Research Value |
The policy value of the research seems
illusive. We can't expose people to
gun violence to change their attitudes and is not obvious why knowing any
causal relationship would change anyone's mind about it. It is more likely a contribution to people
interested in the explanation of attitudes. |
|
Overall |
The question of support
for (or opposition to) gun control is worthwhile. It is not obvious that this proposed
project adds much in its current bare bones form. |
