Research Question (Clear, unambiguous) |
"How are single mom’s career path
constrained by family responsibility in Taiwan?" This is a worthwhile question, but one
difficult to pursue in this general way. |
|
Relevant
Literature |
The literature on the
"motherhood penalty" is relevant, but the work on single mothers
might be more important. |
|
Causal Interpretations
(clear, all parts defined, mechanisms, controls, plausible) |
While discrimination against single mothers may
be significant in Taiwan, the research design issue that stands out is
finding a way to distinguish that possibility from others. In particular, being a single mother is not
a random event, so we have to control for the conditions likely to produce
single motherhood which could also affect future employment. Also, we have to take into account the
effects of motherhood, which both constrain single women's time and can
influence their choices. |

Data
(variables, sample, comparison) |
I'm not familiar with
Taiwanese data, but the referenced study does not sound as if it has the
needed data. |
|
Research Value |
Omitted from project outline. However, the proposed project seems likely
to be valuable, if the research goals can be met. |
|
Overall |
A reasonable direction
for research, but the research plan seems weakly developed so far. |
