Research Question | The general goal of exploring the effects of preschool/head start on children around age 9 seems reasonable. The specific research questions could be a bit clearer. |
Relevant Literature | The two mentioned articles are appropriate, but no plan for the literature review appears here. |
Causal Interpretations | It is difficult to have a useful causal statement of the form
"the quality of the earlier experience determines the quality of the
later outcome," if the goal of the earlier experience is to enhance the
later outcome. The reason is that the
"quality" of the earlier experience is commonly measured by that
later outcome. So, this may only make
sense if one has a concept and measure of the quality of the earlier
experience that is entirely independent of the outcome. Considering the other variable
characteristics of the earlier experience as possible causes of variation in
the outcomes is sensible, but the list does not seem very systematic or
theoretically motivated. This project seems to face issues about "selection effects." Children who attend preschool may come from families who differ in significant ways from those whose children don’t attend preschool. This might include characteristics represented in the dataset and others that are "unobserved" (such as parenting values). Such characteristics might impact both the likelihood of going to preschool and later non-academic outcomes. |
Data | The data seem appropriate in general terms, but have you checked that it includes appropriate measures for all the conditions that you seek to explore and relevant controls? |
Research Value | Okay about general value, but nothing on how it responds to existing literature. |
Timetable | Given no plan for the literature review, it is difficult to believe it will be completed by Oct 31, leaving the rest of the plan in doubt. |
Priorities for Developing a Full Draft | Develop a full literature review. Formulate clearer causal ideas that respond to the existing literature. Ensure that the available data correspond to the intended research. |
Miscellaneous Notes | The word "quantity" seems to be confused with "quality". |
