New York, NY -- The Long Island University at C.W. Post Pioneers defeated the NYU ice hockey team 6-3 on Friday in Syosset, N.Y.
C.W. Post scored four minutes into the first period with an even-strength goal from Steve Lieberman off a pass from James Byrne. With less than four minutes left in the first period, NYU freshman center Dan Perry scored unassisted on a power play to even the score at 1-1 and pick up his first of three points in the game. The tie lasted barely two minutes, until C.W. Post's Mike Augone scored on a power play.
The Pioneers increased their spread to three within the first 10 minutes of the second period with back-to-back goals by Lieberman and Byrne. NYU's Prentiss Noyes scored on a 5-on-four advantage when he slapped the puck past Pioneer goalie Keith Grosman on a pass from Perry and Joe Leonard. Violet goaltender Mike MacDonald kept NYU from losing total grasp of the game by stopping a C.W. Post break away. The Pioneers regained their three goal cushion, however, when Augone scored his second of the game at 15:57.
The Violets' chance of catching up to the Pioneers did not look bright after Kevin Schwab scored, giving the Pioneers a 6-2 lead early in the third period. NYU's Leonard scored haflway through the period off a pass from Perry while on a power play.
Keeping an approximate seasonal average of 50 shots on goal per game, NYU outshot C.W. Post 48 to 23. The Violets, however, were only able to slide three past the opposing goaltender. The team learned that shot quantity does not necessarily breed quality scoring opportunities.
The hockey team will travel to Fordham University at Hommocks Park in Larchmont, NY on Thursday before leaving on Friday for the three-day Pennsylvania State West Tournament at the United States Naval Acdemy in Annapolis, MD. NYU will face off against Penn State West in the first round and looks forward to competing against either the Naval Academy or American University in the second round.
The Violets' record stand at 2-3.
