New York, NY -- The NYU ice hockey team defeated the Seton Hall Pirates 12-5 in South Mountain, NJ last Saturday.
Senior Sean Mahoney gave NYU a 1-0 lead within the first minute of the period as he single-handedly slid the puck behind Seton Hall's goaltender. Sophomore Prentiss Noyes put the Pirates into a 2-0 hole off a pass from freshman Joe Leonard. Seton Hall's captain, Chris Enrico, scored his first of four goals on the power play, cutting NYU's lead to one.
Leonard and Noyes answered back with two late period goals, scoring within 14 seconds of one another. With 45 seconds remaining in the period, Enrico scored on the power play off NYU goaltender Mike McDonald.
Mahoney got his second of the game at 4:26 of the second period from freshman Nick Batheja and sophomore Jesse Belcher-Timme. Seton Hall's Justin Lehn put the puck between McDonald's pads 28 seconds later for an even-strength goal. Batheja converted a pass from Belcher-Timme, increasing NYU's lead to 6-3 while on a four-on-three advantage.
Completing his first hat trick of the season, Mahoney scored at 12:16, assisted by Batheja, on a four-on-four even-strength opportunity. Mahoney picked up an assist as he passed the puck to Belcher-Timme for a power play goal at 16:30. Less than a minute later, freshman Keith Younus scored his first of the season from freshman Nasser Dassi and sophomore Omar-John Chavez during a power play.
Seton Hall's Enrico tried to give his team some life and scored an unassisted goal nine minutes into the third period on the power play. Leonard kept NYU's lead up by six, scorng an even-strength goal assisted by John Hsia.
Enrico struck again at 16:43 with another unassisted goal. Freshman Dan Perry and Chavez scored within one minute of each other at the end of the period, ending any hope for Seton Hall to catch up. NYU out-shot their opposition 50 to 18.
The lopsided victory came after losing on their home ice at Chelsea Piers on Friday to the LaSalle Explorers, 4-3.
LaSalle forward P.J. Quinn opened the scoring of Friday's home game at 5:58 of the first period with a power play goal. Five minutes later, Dan Perry put NYU on the board with an even strength goal off a pass from Joe Leonard.
Prentiss Noyes scored his first of two goals and increased NYU's lead to two after converting a pass from Dan McAvoy during the power play. Noyes' first tally came nine minutes into the second period.
LaSalle took control of the third period as they scored three power play goals within the first eight and a half minutes of the period. Noyes scored at 10:03 during a three-on-three situation to cut LaSalle's lead to one goal.
Officials handed out numerous majors and disqualifications. LaSalle defenseman John Wilkenson was sent off at 1:37 of the second period for head-butting an NYU player. NYU goaltender Jay Lee also received a major for high-sticking a LaSalle player beneath the mask near the end of the period. NYU forward Sean Mahoney was charged with a checking from behind major as well as a game misconduct.
NYU will travel to Long Island on Friday to play C.W. Post and was scheduled to return home to face the Columbia Lions at Chelsea Piers on Saturday. The Columbia game, however, was rescheduled for December 12.
The Violets record now stands at 2-2.
