Dragon's Blood and Ashes is an ongoing project to reconstitute,
practice and teach Medieval techniques of painting and book production:
tempera painting, manuscript writing and book Illumination. Artists, art
historians, students of language and literature, and inquisitive people of
all ages can participate in handling, crushing, smelling, mixing, making,
using and discussing a large number of authentic medieval materials: ink
made from oak trees, pens from feathers, vellum from cow skins, paint from
insects and flowers, and (of course), dragon's blood. The presentation
usually includes practical demonstrations by the artist, along with
hands-on audience participation.
Dragon's Blood and Ashes has been presented at Columbia University,
the University of Pennsylvania, New York University, Iona College, the
Philadelphia
Museum of Art, the Cooper Union, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Maho Bay
(U.S.
Virgin Islands), and at over thirty colleges, guilds, primary schools and
clubs, over the past twenty years.
Dragon's Blood and Ashes can be scheduled as a short lecture, a
half-day workshop or a full course. The session may include one or several
of the following:
Tempera painting (manufacture of panels; gilding; painting with
egg yolk);
Medieval materials (colors from plants and insects);
Book production (designing a a book; calligraphy and
quill-cutting; the transmission of literature).

Cendres et Sangdragon est un projet en cours pour
réconstituer, pratiquer et transmettre les pratiques moyenageuses
de l' écriture sur vélin, de la peinture à la
détrempe et de l' enluminure. Les artistes, les historiens, les
historiens de l' art, les étudiants en littérature et les
curieux de tout âge sont conviés à palper, à
sentir, à broyer, à manufacturer et à discuter un
nombre impressionant de matériaux du moyen-âge: encre de
galle, plumes d' oie, vellin, peinture à base d' insectes ou de
fleurs, et (bien sûr!), sang de dragon. En général, la
séance comprend des démonstrations par l' artiste, avec
participation des spectateurs.
Cendres et Sangdragon a été présenté
dans les vingt dernières années ou plus à: Columbia

conférence, d' un cours d' une demi-journée, ou d' une

Peinture à la détrempe (fabrication des panneaux,
dorure, peinture à l' oeuf);
Matériaux du Moyen-Age (couleurs à base de plantes et
d' insectes).
Production du livre (organisation, écriture, taillage de
plume, transmission de la litérature).
