Writing Musical Theater coverWriting Musical Theater by Allen Cohen and Steven L. Rosenhaus
Published 2006 by Palgrave Macmillan

Writing Musical Theater is a no-nonsense approach for composers, lyricists, and librettists interested in writing musicals. The book is written in two parts. Part I. The Elements, takes the reader through chapters about Theater Basics, The Idea, The Libretto, The Characters, The Lyrics, and The Music. Part II. Writing a Show, gives the reader a chance to "look over our shoulders" as we go through the process of starting two book musicals, one based on Mark Twain's The Prince and the Pauper and the other an original idea. There are several appendices as well: A Brief Historical Overview, Tools, Logistics and Legalities, and Required Reading (and Listening) If you're just getting started, you'll need this book. If you're already doing writing for musical theater, you'll want this book.

Introduction to Music Publishing and Printing by Steven L. Rosenhaus
Self-published 1994, 1997

In 1994 Steven Rosenhaus developed a course of study for music composition and music business majors at New York University; the course was quickly made a requirement for music business majors. At the time no single book offered the range and depth of the material to be covered, prompting the author to write this text. Topics covered include: A brief history of music publishing; how publishers operate; the editorial process; the engraving process; sales and distribution; and copyright. The text, although still quite useful, is currently out of print. Plans to revise and update the book have begun, and additional topics, such as internet-based music publishing, are to be included.
